Given there are around 22,000 workplace fires every year in the UK, getting into the habit of testing your firm alarm should be at the forefront of site safety within your business.
You should test your fire alarm in a commercial premises ideally once per week. Regular testing will ensure that any faults they can be swiftly remedied.
Allocate a day in the week when the fire alarm system will be tested and inform your colleagues; whether that be an email reminder or a diary reminder, or simply a procedure that has been trained out to your staff. Add details regarding the designated fire alarm testing day to your inductions and procedures.
Being consistent with testing the alarm on the same day of the week is important in order to build good fire safety standards on site for you and your colleagues and shows that the weekly test takes priority over whatever activity is taking place on site at the time.
Best practice is to test a different fire alarm call point each week.
